Chamonix Ski Areas.
For beginner skiers there are some fantastic green and blue runs to perfect those turns on, particularly in Le Tour, Le Brevent and Les Houches. If you're a complete beginner skier the best place to make your first turns is on the Vormaine at the bottom of the Le Tour ski area.
Itermediate skiers are spoilt in Chamonix as they will find plentiful skiing in all of the areas. If you can comfortably ski a blue or red runs the whole of the Chamonix Valley is open to you. Maybe try a ski safari, skiing each of the different ski areas on different days.
For advanced skiers there is Les Grands Montets and L'Aiguille du Midi where you can ski the Vallee Blanche, but a guide is a must as the descent is all off piste.
The Grands Montets has a lot of off piste skiing both on the front, where there a 3 large powder bowls below the glacier that are easily accessable. From the top lift you can ski the front glacier or the glacier at the back or descend down the Pas de Chevre to the Mer de Glace.
Off Piste Skiing in Chamonix.
Chamonix is known as the capital of alpinism and for good reason, there is a huge amount of off piste to be explored in the Chamonix Valley and not just off of the Aiguille du Midi. The most famous descent is the Valley Blanche but more challenging routes such L'Envers du Plan and Le Grand Envers are within the capabilities of most good off piste skiers. You have to be able to turn easily off piste as often you will have to negotiate numerous cravasses. A Mountain Guide is a must as you are skiing on glaciers in a non patrolled area.
You can download a map of the Chamonix Ski Areas. Most of the skiing in Chamonix is above 2,000m so that makes Chamonix one of the most snow sure ski resorts in the alps, with one of the longest seasons. The Chamonix ski areas normally open in early December and don't close until early to mid May.
